About
Timothy Cox is Professor of Medicine Emeritus and Director of Research at the University of Cambridge, Life Fellow of Sidney Sussex College and Honorary Consultant Physician at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, UK. He was elected Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 1998. Professor Cox is a trustee of the Cambridge Rare Disease Network charity.
After qualifying in Medicine at the London Hospital Medical College, he trained in Oxford, the Royal Postgraduate Medical School and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Professor Cox has held positions in internal medicine, gastroenterology
and haematology. With a specialist clinical interest in inherited metabolic diseases, including lysosomal disease, his research involves gene therapy and studies in molecular pathogenesis with particular reference to the sphingolipidoses. The laboratory is supported by the UK Medical Research Council, the National Institute for Health Research and several charities. Professor Cox has published numerous original research articles and is an Editor of the three-volume Oxford Textbook of Medicine, in its 5th Edition with a sixth now in press.
